Good Trouble pays homage to the late Congressman John Lewis, one of our civil rights icons. Congressman Lewis is also part of my mugshot series. You can find that piece in my gallery. I will blog about it at a later date. I’d actually started this piece before his death as part of my desire to shine light on the Black Lives Movement. I started taking pictures of the daily protests that were held at the South Carolina State House and studied photos from some of the marches to highlight certain characters and to decide which signs to feature. These are the figures that spoke to me. As it has been all over the country, I’m honored that most of our protests have been very diverse and spearheaded by young people. Please realize that my portrayal is just a small snapshot of the people and the signs they carried. I hope to do other pieces featuring the movement and honoring the victims of police brutality.

Our current president will make you think that the protesters are all destructive anarchists. Please realize that they operate out of love for this country just as the veteran who is depicted fought for us on the battlefield and now carries our flag in protest to what’s happening at home. I hope this piece inspires you to wake up and join us as we go out to vote in November. That is something we all can and must do.
